Q. What is DHEA?

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and liver. DHEA can be converted to both male and female hormones. DHEA levels typically peak at about 20 years of age and decline rapidly after age 25.

Q. How is DHEA 25 different from other DHEA supplements?

DHEA 25 contains plant-derived, micronized DHEA, and it is the only DHEA supplement that has been independently tested and certified by NSF International for content accuracy and purity.

Q. Does DHEA 25 have side effects?

DHEA 25 is considered safe for most people when taken in doses of 100 mg or less for limited time periods. DHEA is a hormone that can have side effects at higher doses. Side effects may include acne, oily skin, facial hair growth, hair loss, stomach upset, or decreased HDL cholesterol levels.

For certain health conditions, DHEA may be recommended in higher doses and should be taken under the guidance and supervision of a healthcare provider.

Q. Is there anyone who should not take DHEA 25?

Yes. The following individuals should not take DHEA 25:

• • Any person with liver problems.
• • Any person who has been diagnosed with a hormone-related cancer, such as breast or prostate cancer.

• • Men who are trying to father a pregnancy as DHEA can affect sperm production.

Q. Can I take DHEA 25 with other nutritional supplements?

Yes. DHEA 25 can be taken with most other nutritional supplements with the exception of inositol. In certain individuals, taking both DHEA and inositol may counteract the potential beneficial effect of either product. Inositol supplements may lower testosterone levels, and DHEA supplements may raise testosterone levels. Follow your health care provider's guidance if you are taking both these supplements.

Q. Does DHEA 25 interact with any prescription medications?

As with any dietary supplement, it is recommended you discuss with your pharmacist and or health care team to clarify whether DHEA 25 can be taken along with your medications.

Do not take DHEA 25 before talking to your health care provider or pharmacist if you are taking:

Aromatase inhibitors (Anastrozole (Arimidex), Exemestane (Aromasin), Letrozole (Femara)) – These medications are used to help lower estrogen levels in the body. DHEA can be converted to estrogen in the body, therefore taking DHEA along with these medications might decrease their effectiveness.

Fulvestrant (Faslodex) or Tamoxifen (Nolvadex) - Some types of cancers are affected by hormones in the body. Estrogen-sensitive cancers are cancers that are affected by estrogen levels in the body. Fulvestrant and tamoxifen are used for these types of cancer. DHEA can be converted to estrogen in the body, therefore taking DHEA along with these medications might decrease their effectiveness.

Medications that are changed by the liver Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP34) substrates (alprazolam (Xanax), amitriptyline (Elavil), amiodarone (Cordarone), citalopram (Celexa), fexofenadine (Allegra), lansoprazole (Prevacid), losartan (Cozaar), lovastatin (Mevacor), prednisone, sertraline (Zoloft), sildenafil (Viagra), simvastatin (Zocor) and many others) - CYP34 are important enzymes in your body, mainly found in the liver to break down medications in the body. DHEA might decrease how quickly the liver breaks down some medications. Taking DHEA along with these medications may interfere with their effectiveness. Talk to your health care provider before taking DHEA 25 if taking these medications.

DHEA may also interfere with the effectiveness of the following medications:

Insulin: Insulin is used to lower blood sugar. Insulin can also lower the amount of DHEA in the body. By lowering DHEA in the body, insulin might lower the effectiveness of DHEA supplements. Monitor your blood sugar (glucose) level carefully if you are taking insulin.
